Schattenmuehle in Loffingen

We had a large salad and a vegetable soup. The salad was extremely disappointing for 8.5 euros the soup was ok. The service didn't seem very happy to be there either. Everyone with aspirations should currently better seek something different.

More shade than anything else Unfortunately, we let ourselves be carried away by the only offer after a hike, to make use of the gastronomic "service" of the Schattenmühle - and would have better read the reviews here beforehand. Absolutely unfriendly, worst ready-made food and at steep prices. We will not be back!

Unfortunately, the staff were unfriendly and there were no curtains or lampshades in the room and there was no real storage space in the bathroom. But the room was clean!

Yesterday I had cheese spaetzle there. Completely inedible. Despite being very hungry after a hike, I couldn't finish it. I should have been puzzled when I saw that the plants in the forecourt are made entirely of plastic. For fans of finished products only!

After a hike, stopping off is actually something nice. But not here. The waitresses are unfriendly and the prices steep. That's probably the case if you have no competition on site. A shame but clearly not to be recommended!

Very nice inn, simply furnished rooms, delicious food. Great starting point for beautiful hikes through the Wutach Gorge

We were on the Schluchtensteig and used the shadow mill as a place to stay. The location is great, the mill is beautiful and the service during the meal was great. Very friendly and attentive young service. The room was simple but adequate.

We stopped for a meal here after a long hike. The staff was friendly and very quick. However, the food was not so good. The spaetzle were bought and the meat was tough. Unfortunately, the sauce couldn't save the whole thing either. I wouldn't eat there again.

Watery coffee, unfriendly service, we didn't even get a menu, if I read through the other reviews it was probably better that we didn't eat anything there either. You don't know data protection either, a list is simply laid out at the entrance where all guests have to register. You don't need it again.

Terrible food and even more terrible staff. Hard to beat when it comes to rudeness. That's exactly what you don't need after a nice hike. Recommend closing this shop.

Were on the Schluchtensteig for 6 days .... unfortunately I can neither recommend the Schattenmühle as a cozy place to stop for a break, nor even as a place to stay overnight! The waitresses are moderately friendly, we were informed directly at check-in that there was food at 6 p.m.?!?! The rooms are big enough for one night, unfortunately the mattresses are very thin and the slatted frame is very hard. There is also the somewhat peculiar smell in the rooms. Unfortunately there were no curtains in front of the windows, which is absolutely unreasonable in connection with the adjacent street! The result was an unfortunately not very restful night. Smoke alarms were also only noticed by their absence. The towels that were ready have seen much better days. They were much too small to dry properly after showering, and the color and smell of the towels, I missed my microfiber towel, which I bought especially for hiking trips. At dinner the first impressions continued. The tarte flambée, which looked good on the neighboring tables, was only available once, so that one was forced to eat something different. The other dishes were unfortunately far too expensive for the quality and one of the beer glasses that was brought to us tempted us to drink from the bottle because of the cleanliness. Unfortunately, we also had to observe that one of the waitresses was wearing the mouthguard in such a way that it only covered her mouth, but not her nose. My personal highlight, however, was when I discovered on the map that there was a fee to fill your drinking bottle with tap water! € 2.50 for 500 ml !! The breakfast as such would have been ok, unfortunately, after a very short time, so many flies were buzzing around us that I lost my appetite. The Schattenmühle is lucky that because of its location there is no alternative for hikers and day tourists!

The Schattenmühle benefits from its great location. The quality of the food left a lot to be desired. Salads taste bland, main courses are mediocre at best. Only the pancakes and the cappuccino were good.

Worst accommodation during the hiking week! The presumably Eastern European staff is unfriendly and wants to dictate meal times. Ready meals are served. Apple strudel mud puff from the freezer, sauces for schnitzel from the Maggitüte! The rooms worse than in any youth hostel. Musty smell, only small towels, no curtains or shutters in front of the windows, darkening not possible! No smoke alarms in the rooms (not legally!), everything made of wood. For breakfast, the cheapest Aufbackbrötchen that turn to dust in the mouth and countless flies in the dining room. WLAN only for a few minutes with good luck, otherwise no network! Absolutely not to be recommended!

Wanted to eat there after the hike. Below was advertised with signs "continuously warm kitchen". Then unfortunately came the sobering answer to eat only for guests with a room, we could only have a drink .. Why isn't that on the bottom of the sign? Too bad.

In contrast to the other experience, we were very satisfied. The conditions were extremely friendly and neatly dressed. The dishes were very good and reasonably priced. Hope to be there again soon.

We were hiking on the Schluchtensteig and were eager too arrive at the Schattenmühle after an exhausting day, but boy were we disappointed. First we were taken in by the "friendly" chef waiter of the restaurant, who we don't blame, because all staff present was obviously stressed out and under time constraints by management. But after we got our keys, the next unpleasant surprise. The room was tiny. But not because the building is old or not that big. No, it was recently renovated and huge. Its just because the owner tried to cram as many rooms on one floor as possible. And this experience like being an animal kept in a stable, kept going on. Feeding time was at 6pm, not later. If you arrive later, you wont get your booked dinner, because all the staff leaves at around 7. Then you get served a tacky meal, with an OK soup, a dull salad, and Spätzle from the super market with an unseasoned pork chop. All that for just 18€! In other restaurants they would serve you a steak for this price. Because the hotel is located in the scenic Wutach gorge, there is unfortunately no mobile reception. So you have to rely on Wifi for evening entertainment or getting weather information, because no TVs available. But they have only one Wifi router for the huge building and reception is awful at the rooms. So you also can't reach anybody in the oustide world. Additionaly the router seems to be misconfigured, so some devices can't login, because the IP-address limit is reached. If you try to sleep instead, good luck, because the walls are so thin you can hear people snorring in the other rooms. Also, no curtains or other means to darken the room! The only good things to mention were the cleanliness and the good breakfast and lunch packet for the hike ahead.

I would give ZERO stars but unfortunately you can't do that! We have 30 min. Waited in vain for our drinks. Even after we repeatedly pointed this out to the waitress, the drinks didn't come! In addition, guests who came at a much later point in time already have their drinks! Just rude!

We (a youth group) wanted to fill up our urgently needed water supplies there, so we sat down and ordered something. We should still pay € 2.50 per half liter for tap water for our water bottles for hiking. Overall, the boss in particular was very unfriendly. In any case, we didn't feel comfortable and moved on thirsty.

After a long walk we were helped super unfriendly, the rooms all had no curtains, apparently this is normal in this hotel. Staff do their best, but they are short and their boss is a miser who skimp on everything. Bad food in an uninviting place. What a loveless hotel. Apparently it is the only place where you can spend the night to take beautiful walks in the wutang gorge, but if possible, avoid this place!

After a long hike through the Wutach Gorge, we wanted to reward ourselves with a cool yeast in the shadow mill - unfortunately, the inn thwarted our plans. We were informed that only house guests would be served - and not particularly friendly. No recommendation!

Vegans, be aware: the "vegan" breakfast contained three non-vegan items: Rama margarine, Rioba chocolate hazelnut spread, and honey. Apart from that, we got coffee/tea (no orange juice), bread with marmelade, a vegan spread (ingredients: yeast, water, palm fat, palm oil, etc.), and a bowl with cut carrot, cucumber, paprika and tomato. We had pre-ordered the (vegan) three course dinner and got a leek soup, a mixed salad, and a rice dish. It tasted good-ish, but definitely lacked protein (like beans or lentils). We also ordered the (vegan) "Lunchpaket", which consisted of two sandwiches with the vegan spread, an apple, and a water bottle. As for the room: It had not been cleaned properly when we arrived (despite Corona): there was a piece of ham and pretzel crumbles on the table, and a hair from the previous guest on the night stand (after flagging this, the table got cleaned but not the night stand). One power plug was broken and the windows did not have any blinds or curtains. To summarize: -2 stars for the room issues -2 stars for the food issues +1 star for the good will to offer vegan options = 2 stars Note that there is no mobile connectivity at all around the place. There is a WiFi in the lounge and breakfast area, but it is slow and you will have to ask for the password. PS: In the evening, the waitresses did mostly not wear any mask. In the morning, the business owner (who takes care of the breakfast and payment) did wear a mask, but mostly below his nose and often pulling it away when speaking. This said though, masks were apparently not compulsory in Baden-Württemberg anymore when we where there in July (at least not for guests).

I had a cappuccino, it cost 4 € and it was thinner than in Finnish gas stations.

Not to pricey per night, but the food on the terrace is pretty up there in terms of cost. Super expensive tap water, for example. Unfortunately no network (LTE or WiFi) in our room, so planning next day's hike was a bit of a challenge. Showers OK. Bed really(!) bad.

Awful. Don’t believe the hype.

First, do not go a day after rain. The trail is very narrow, a lot of people are going so every moment you need to let pass. All the place it a long walk, not do difficult going up and down slowly.

This place needs more hands. 30 minutes for someone to take an order another 10 minutes to get drinks.

Overpriced location. Bad rooms. Take the Bus and sleep in the city much better.

The waitress charged us double and I'm sure now it wasn't a mistake. On top of that the food is average and the staff unpleasant.

Got charged double, I did not realize it until I left and was on my way home.. 75€ for 2 dishes and 1 beer, the girl tricked us, we were the only 2 customers left, impossible to make such a mistake. Wish you all the worst.

Room is nice and clean, staff are friendly. The food was ok - I didn't expect a star chef menu in a hiking hotel anyway. Breakfast was a nice surprise - tables set for everyone, lots of coffee already on the table, and even the coffee milk warmed to temperature - didn't ask for it, was just done. So in my view good value for money.

It is a Nice place but its not it. The girls who workshop There are Nice and hard Working. Our room was decoraded cheap. IKEA labels stil in the nightstands. Ceeling falling apart. Bricks under the toilet tot support it against falling. All together not a Nice hotel

Apfelstrudel and kaiserschmand were good and creamy. Friendly staf. Bathroom was old and a bit stinky. I did not like the trashy looking bikers. They looked as if they smoked too many cigarettes and drank too much alcohol. Anyway, good place to have a bite.

BE AWARE OF THIS RESTAURANT !! They sell cheap bad quality food to high prices. We waited 30minutes before leaving the restaurant unnoticed by any of the staff which couldnt speak german or english fluently. The Restaurant is optimized to trick the customers with some "Dirndl's" and "Bollenhüte" to seem like a serious traditional restaurant. I even wrote this in english to spread awareness to customers from other countries.

It's a very pleasant site for hiking and interacting with the nature. The other hikers are very friendly and you can also have dinner at the restaurant or stay at the hotel.

It's very nice to find this tranquil hotel in black forest, we got all the basic equipments we need here.

It is a great place to stay however long you want. I stayed there with a couple of friends over the weekend and this place is amazing. It is comfortable, the food is good and the locations is completely unbeatable.

"Unassuming" doesn't cover this. This hotel features OK but muchly overpriced food, usually with some rant by the owner about how expensive and hard everything is. The menu even writes about the "poor cooks" who have to peel and shred potatoes for the Rösti. Give me a break, I can hear tens of thousands of cook apprentices laugh right now, Rösti isn't even close to being one of those stupendous and tedious preparations. But, hey, for 19€ you get an OK Rösti with an OK piece of pork and an OK egg on top. OK, but not 19€ OK. The rooms? Well, mine and apparently another one didn't have blinds. So this morning we added "J Mikka's Pale Ass" to the things wanderers on the Querweg were enjoying on their hike. The "complimentary" breakfast is not very complimentary. It's five slices of cold cuts, one slice of cheese, and two buns. No egg, no water, no OJ, nothing. I'd much rather pay $5 and get a decent breakfast.
